Backing

Your choice of backing will significantly impact the finished quilt.

A busy print back will almost always look good with any kind of quilting.  It is very forgiving of non-precise piecing.  The busy print shows only the quilting outline and the quilt will usually reverse nicely.  Most quilting "stops and starts" are not as noticeable as in the plain backing.

Plain backing shows the quilting pattern and thread color or colors used on the front.  This can be very attractive if the patterns on the front of the quilt combine to create a beautiful pattern on the back.  However, sometimes it can be much less attractive than a busy backing.  An example is when doing stitch-in-the-ditch, a plain backing will show every flaw in the piecing of the quilt.  If the piecing is precise and a complimentary single or possibly dual thread color is used, the back may look very nice.  If the piecing is not precise, every misaligned corner or wavy seam will be exposed.  Whereas the top of the quilt may look quite nice, the back may be less acceptable.

We recommend a busy backing in most cases but will work with you to create a finished product that you will be happy with.  You may want to coordinate your backing with the front of the quilt to create an over-all effect.

If you desire, you can provide the fabric and we can make the backing for you.    In this case, we will need to discuss how much fabric you will need.  If you desire, you may purchase backing from us.  We carry top quality unbleached muslin in 45" width and white-on-white and white-on-muslin prints in 108" widths.

Backing should be squared up and a minimum 4 inches larger than the quilt top on each side.  If you prepare the backing and it is to small or not square, some extra steps will be required to complete the quilting.  You will be charged $15.00 per hour for the extra time needed.
